A Companion to In Memoriam [SIGNED]

London: Macmillan & Co., 1888. First edition. Hardcover. This is the author's personal copy. Signed at half-title, with addition 2 pages of notes by the author. Small octavo. 72pp. Green cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. Edges uncut. The book serves as a critical literary companion to Alfred Lord Tennyson's "In Memoriam A.H.H.", and serves as an interpretive tool for the poem. The work goes through the entire poem, and like the poem, is divided into cantos (sections), each with its own corresponding interpretation. The rear free endpapers feature two pages of handwritten notes in ink by the author, describing her encounter with Tennyson, upon the book's publication. Tennyson stated that "with one exception, I had rendered his meaning accurately. 'It's all right except one section'." The second page of notes describes Chapman's attempt to correct the one mistake she'd made. The author has also noted the problematic passage she discussed, marked with an "X" in ink. Binding with some light staining, scratches and smudging to boards. Edges and head & tail of spine lightly bumped and rubbed. Light foxing and offsetting to interior covers and free endpapers. Starting at page 48. Binding in over good+, interior in overall very good- condition. g+ to vg-. Item #41544
