Red ruling on all pages. Historiated end piece. Advertisements of the publisher on back cover. One of the early picture stories emphasizing the anticlerical position of Wilhelm Busch. It was originally published when Pope Pius IX declared the papal infallibility in 1870. In the same year the state prosecutor in Offenburg filed a suit against the publisher for debasing religion and provoking a public nuisance with publications of lewd writings. The Düsseldorf State Court had the publication temporarily confiscated but in 1871 the publisher was acquitted though the publication was banned in Austria until 1902. The publisher refused to publish further stories of Busch which prompted Busch's move to the publisher Bassermann where his title Die fromme Helene was published. Beautiful b/w illustrations throughout. Text in German, Gothic Script. Wraps with some wear along edges, small chips and closed tears, light creasing.
