Tennyson's Brook [SIGNED & INSCRIBED]

Newcastle-upon-Tyne: Arthur Brown, 1879. First edition. Hardcover. Quarto. (4) + 13 prints. Green cloth portfolio, with blind stamped ruling and gilt lettering on front cover. Missing original string ties. Inscribed and signed by Brown to English painter Mary B. Barnard. The work is a beautiful collection of 13 carbon photographic prints of Skelton Beck, a stream at Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorksire (measuring approximately 3" x 3 3/4" on average), mounted on heavy card stock (measuring appx. 8 1/4" x 9 3/4"). Each print has a corresponding verse from Tennyson's poem "The Brook", from which the collection draws its inspiration, captioned beneath the photo. The 4 page printed insert at the front of the portfolio, gives detail and inspiration for the creation of the work along with a printed copy of Tennyson's letter of approval for the collection and a letter of acceptance from Buckingham Palace, on behalf of the Queen. From the combined library of English professors and scholars Gwin J. Kolb and his son Jack Kolb. Portfolio with some rubbing, staining and scratches to covers, spine and corners. Some closed tears and small chips to interior flaps of portfolio. Insert and plates with some light smudging and age toning. A few plates with some edges and corners lightly bumped.
