The two volumes contain a total of ten chapters on Chinese ceramics. The first volume discusses the topics of kiln traditions, colors, pattern variations, and glaze styles. The second volume contains information pertaining to various shapes used, and specific chapters on pots, plates and cups. Also discussed are the methods of identifying counterfeit objects. The work covers the Ming and Qing eras, among others. There is a table of contents at the front of the first volume. The text contains valuable information regarding historic and technical terminology for the Chinese ceramic tradition, and is still used to this day as a resource for scholars and museums. The work is considered one of the "Four Masterpieces on Chinese Ceramics". Text in Chinese.

Pettus is well-known as the creator of Chinese fore-edge paintings, as he was in Hong Kong and became a voracious book and art collector, importing many items to America.
Portfolio with some rubbing to the hinges and corners, with cracking and loosening to the right hinge of the front flap. Sunning and scratching to the black cloth. Missing bone fasteners. Softcover wrappers with some light scratches to the covers, and some light rubbing and creasing to the corners of vol.1. Previous owner's name at the top of the front covers and the interior flap of the portfolio in ink. Interiors with the edges and/or corners of a few pages rubbed/chipped. Interior of vol.1 with library bookplate at the interior front wrapper and some sporadic notes in pencil throughout the first part of the text.
