東京 (Tokyo): 古今堂 (Kokondo/Kokindo), Shōwa 11 [1936]. Ex-library, limited edition. Hardcover. Folio (15 x 12 1/2"). [47] leaves. Original string-bound illustrated cloth with printed title laid on front cover. All paper edges gilt. Half-title and title in red and black lettering. Book housed in its original blue cloth portfolio, with printed title laid on spine. Two decorative ivory clasps. #184 of a limited edition on an unknown number of copies. Spanning 300 years, from the Sengoku era (mid 16th century) to the end of the Tokugawa period (mid 19th century), this splendid work introduces private collector Nagao Kinya's collection of 20 traditional Japanese costumes, as listed in the table of contents. This is a presentational copy of the book from the editor. Stamp of the Yamanaka Shokai bookstore.

Photographically reproduced in full color, the magnificent costumes featured in this book show the following garments: - A variety of six kimono-shaped Noh costumes (shozoku), with bold pattern layouts and opulent textile techniques.

- A Kosode: a basic Japanese robe for both men and women, and worn as both an undergarment and over garment. The literal meaning of 'kosode' is 'small sleeve,' which refers to the sleeve opening.

- A variety of six kimono robes for men, and three for women.

- Three Yucata garments, which are casual summer kimonos made with straight seams and wide sleeves, with a variety of colors and patterns.

Each color plate is tissue-guarded, and is accompanied on the opposite page by an extensive description in Japanese and French.

Portfolio soiled/discolored along edges. Binding age-toned and foxed along edges. Upper left corner bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Text in Japanese and French. Portfolio in overall good-, binding in good- to good, interior in good+ to very good condition. g to vg. Item #41264
