Founded in 1870 by Philip Gilbert Hamerton, a British artist, art critic and author, this 8th volume of "The Portfolio" is splendidly illustrated throughout with 34 full-page tissue-guarded plates, as well as numerous etchings, woodcuts, and sketches, within the text. The book contains selections from the Althorp Gallery, and the National Gallery, by various artists, etched by masters of the craft. Also includes a large section on Albert Dürer, his teachers, rivals, and followers. Included are works by Rubens, Rembrandt, Reynolds, Titian, Murillo, and many more. A comprehensive and informative text accompanies the illustrations.
