"Three positive factors may be said to mark the difference between the medieval and modern in Jewish history: the removal of political disabilities, the Wissenschaft des Judentums in the nineteenth century, and, in our day, the recent re-establishment of Israel as a Sovereign State. All three movements are closely interwoven, and its never easy to decide whether they were brought about by wider, circumscribing social changes or by an unrelenting searching of the spirit common to both Jew and Gentile. These changes were accompanied by the almost complete loss of a God-centered world-view among the great majority of the Jewish people, and, needless to say, this loss, if it is felt as such, is common to the world as a whole. The purpose of the present inquiry is to trace certain aspects of this transition to Enlightenment in England by means of source material which has hitherto escaped attention" (Author).
