Decorative marbled endpapers. First American stereotyped edition. Supplementary text by J.C. Oehlschläger has been included with the main text of the dictionary. One of the texts added by Oehlschläger details a history of influences on the English language from the time of the Romans to the contemporary period. First published in England, the work was considered a definitive reference text in its day. Binding with scratches, rubbing and bumping along corners, edges, hinges of spines, heads and tails of spines, front and back boards. Ex-library. Library stickers at tail of spines. Interior with ex-libris stickers to interior front covers and front endpapers. Vol. 1 with book block detaching at interior front cover. Foxing and some water stains to corners and edges of title page, and sporadically to bottom right corner of first 143 pages.
