A history of the Jewish oral law from the biblical period through R. Joseph Karo's writing of the Shulhan Arukh. R. Isaac Hirsch Weiss was a prominent 19th century Talmudic scholar, who lived much of his life in Vienna. While Weiss rejected biblical criticism and believed that the Pentateuch was a unified work dating from the time of Moses, he did see it as largely a product of human design and subject to historical analysis. He therefore came under criticism from many orthodox traditionalists. This work was first printed in Vienna from 1871-91. A Yiddish edition was printed in Vilna from 1904-10. Text in Hebrew. Bindings with some light bumping and rubbing to head & tail of spine and corners. Light smudging and scratches to front and back covers. Interior with age toning to pages.
