The author starts pre-WWII and chronicles the events through the end of the war and on into the time when many survivors immigrated from that region. The persecution of Jews at the hands of both the Soviets as well as local governments is discussed, as is the physical and social infrastructure and mechanisms that were put in place to help these communities survive in the face of harsh and oppressive social conditions.
