Small Oblong Octavo. 83(1)pp. Original gray wraps with black and white lettering on cover, white on spine. Photographic documentation of the mass murder ordered by Stalin in the years 1937 – 1938. Approximately 1,5 Million people were executed an buried in mass graves in Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus. The Polish photographer Tomasz Kizny collected many of the photos made of prisoners just before their execution. He mad photographs of the sites of the mass murders while he was working on this project, traveling through the former Soviet Union. The astounding fact about this wave of terror remains that it took place in great secret, apart from a few hundred public trials of political activists that were staged in 1937–1938. Profusely illustrated with b/w prison photographs of the victims and color photographs of the respective sites of the mass graves. Captions for all photographs are in German and English and provide brief biographical data of the victims, respectively the estimated number of victims in various grave sites. Includes map indicating the numerous sites of these atrocities. Text in German and English. Wraps and block slightly bend top to bottom near foredge.
