Philadelphia: Billstein & Son, 1888. First edition. Softcover. Octavo. 32pp. Original gray wraps with black lettering on cover, protected by modern mylar. Singerman # 3730. ""The Sunday School for religious instructions of the children of the Hebrew congregations in Philadelphia" –the first Jewish Sunday School in America– was founded by Rebecca Gratz, and at first conducted under the auspices of the "Female Hebrew Benevolent Society," of which Miss Gratz was secretary." (Historical Sketch) The Board met at Mrs. Hart's, February 4th, and decided that a Sunday-school be established under the direction of the Board, and teachers appointed among the young ladies of the congregations. The Sunday-school was opened on March 4th, 1838, the fifty-seventh birthday of Rebecca Gratz.

The booklet contains a brief historical sketch of the Philadelphia Hebrew Sunday School and its offshoots, a note on the Commemorative Celebration of the Founding of Hebrew Sunday Schools in America, A Prayer by Rev. Dr. M. Jastrow, and address of Rev. Dr. S Morais, the History of the Sunday Schools by Solomon Soli-Cohen, an oration by Mayer Sulzberger, an address by Mr. John Wanamaker, and a closing prayer by Rev. Dr. Joseph Krauskopf. Contains a list of the Board of Managers and a listing of members of the Committee of Arrangements on Semi-Centennial Celebration with Mr. John Samuel as chairman. Wraps darkened along edges, a three inch closed tear at top of cracked front joint, few minor chips here. Block slightly age-toned. Wraps in overall good-, interior in very good condition. g- to vg.
