Publication issued by the Margarethe Krupp Foundation for Housing Welfare. An introduction of the progressive housing policies of the city of Essen in the early 20th century, in particular those of the industrial giant, the Friedrich Krupp AG. Essen is located in the industrial area of Germany (Rhein/Ruhr). The the marriage of her eldest daughter Berta with Gustav von Bohlen-Halbach, inspired Friedrich Alfred Krupp's wife Margarethe to establish the foundation for housing of the workers of the German steel manufacturer. She provided a starting capital of one million Mark and an area the size of approximately fifty sports arenas (50 ha) for the foundation. Work on the Margarethen-Höhe began in 1909 and by the time of publication 300 units for worker's families were completed.
The value of each unit was seen in its aesthetic design as well as its cost effectiveness. Furniture were supplied and could be acquired by the families over the course of two years. The book is profusely illustrated with extraordinary b/w photographs, some sepia-toned prints on heavy paper stock showing numerous types of buildings and the environment. It includes architectural drawings, plans, a map of the settlement, an essay on the administration as well as a list of craftsmen involved in the project. Text in German.
