Unpaginated (70pp.). Original leather with gilt-stamped illustration on cover, lettering on spine. Brown endpapers. Ziegler was a self taught German painter who received his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Heidelberg in 1919. He was openly opposing the National Socialists and immigrated, with his Jewish fiancé Edith Lendt, to the island of Korcula (Yugoslavia) at the end of 1932. In 1938 they moved to Huyton near Liverpool where he was interned as a "hostile foreigner." Starting in 1940 he worked for the British Ministry of Information and the American War Office. Under the pseudonym Robert Ziller he work as a cartoonist and book illustrator. Among his works are three portfolios of drawings depicting the "Führer (Adolf Hitler)" and the Nationalist Germany. This collection of "Biblical Women" was created by Ziegler at the age of seventy eight, nevertheless, the impressive depiction of Adam and Eve, Lot's daughters, Rahel, Samson and Delilah and eleven others are an inspired and vital rendering. Text in German. Some light scuffing of leather along edges and spine and somewhat darkened along edges of front cover. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition. g to vg. Item #39983
