Israël et l'Antisémitisme [Collection Tradition Française]

New York: Rand School of Social Science, 1943. First edition in this collection. Softcover. Octavo. 30pp. Original printed wrappers.

This book was published by the Rand School of Social Science in New York in 1943 as a condemnation of Vichy France's anti-Semitic policy under Pétain. Preceded by a 4-page introduction, this work reproduces the noble text of "Israël et l'Antisémitisme" by Anatole de Leroy-Beaulieu (1842-1912), a French historian who wrote extensively on antisemitism, which he repudiated as a baseless prejudice and insidious doctrine of hatred. The author was a descendent of an old French Catholic family and was inspired by his religious faith to fight for individual freedom, regarding it as his principal duty as a scholar to defend the liberty of thought. Among his many activities in behalf of the Jews, stirred by renewed outbreak of pogroms against the Jews in Russia, he founded in 1894 the "Comité de Défense du Progrès Social." Anatole de Leroy-Beaulieu 's religious sentiments as well as his intellectual convictions made him one of the great opponents of antisemitism in the 19th century.

Collection Tradition Française's aim was to published a series of books reproducing the texts of some of France's greatest authors (Renan, Barrès, Péguy, Leroy-Beaulieu, and others) in which they condemned anti-Semitism. Anatole de Leroy-Beaulieu's "Israël et l'Antisémitisme" appears to have been the first one of this series.
