A Treatise on Hat-Making and Felting, Including a Full Exposition of the Singular Properties of Fur, Wool, and Hair

Philadelphia: Henry Carey Baird, 1868. First edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 68pp. Original brown cloth, with printed title pasted on front cover. From the book: "The writer of these pages, being a practical hatter, desires to describe intelligibly his calling, dispensing with all technical terms, at the same time conscious of being liable to receive an unfair criticism from his brother tradesmen, although perfectly innocent on their part, resulting from the prejudices engendered by the many would-be secrets that pertain to the different work-shops, together with their various modes and methods of working, all of which most generally are but trifles merely to gain a name." This treatise is full of rather unusual information, such as these: the original idea for felt came from cow's hairballs, and the first machines designed to make felts were based on how a cows stomach might work. This work contains 8 figures, including one full page. Binding slightly age-toned on spine and along edges. Stain at back cover. Title label sunned, and slightly stained. Pages slightly age-toned throughout. Binding in overall good- to good, interior in good+ to very good condition. g- to vg. Item #39604
