Book of entertainment for Rabbi Yosef ben Meir ben Svarah. The book describes traditional literature and its wisdom with a special interest in human transformation in the modern world. The author creates a connection between the ancient Jewish sages and the modern pioneers denoting the spirit of Israel within ancient history and modern development. Israel Davidson (1870, Jonava, Lithuania - 1939, Great Neck, New York) was an American Jewish writer and publisher and has been recognized as one of the leading American Hebrew writers in his era. His magnum opus was the four volume Otsar ha-shirah veha-piyut = Thesaurus of Mediaeval Hebrew Poetry (NY, 1924–1933). Davidson studied in yeshivas (religious schools) in Jonava, Volozhin, and Slobodka. In 1898, he emigrated to New York, worked at a few occupations before earning a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Text in Hebrew. Binding with light wear along edges, bumped corners, some fraying at head and tail of spine. Light foxing inside front cover, some staining at lower edge of free endpaper. Starting at page 16. Light water staining at margins of last five leaves, not affecting text. Diagonal creasing at rear end paper.
