New York: Shulsinger Bros. 1967. Hardcover. Large Octavo. 108pp. Black paper-covered boards with gilt lettering in gilt vignette on cover and gilt lettering on spine. Decorative title page. Book is a collection of topics are taken from the Aggadah, the literary transmission of tradition and the Sha"S, which is a Hebrew acronym for the expression "Shishah Sedarim" (=Six orders), denoting the six main areas into which the Mishnah and Talmuds are divided. It thus became a synonym for Talmud, particularly at times when the Talmud was banned by Christian censors. The original title of this work was in fact "Masoret ha-Talmud." "Masoret" means "tradition," but it also alludes to the "Masora," the scholarly discipline that concerned itself with the precise transmission of each word and letter of the Bible. Teachings from the section of Sha"S include Mitzwot, which come by virtue of a transgression, the redeeming of the firstborn son, using of electricity on Shabbat, Charity, stealing and selling on Shabbat. The aggadic section include essays on: Comfort, comfort my people, the reading and the sanctification, this is Chanukkah, Korakh and his community, How to pray on Rosh Chodesh (the New Month) and more. Text in Hebrew. Binding with some wear at head and tail of spine. Minor stains at margins of title page. Starting at table of content.
