Persia: NP, ND. Original artwork. Loose_leaf. Collection of twenty-one 19th-century Qajar-era Persian Miniatures executed in the Safavid painting tradition. These miniatures were intended to be kept in an album called "muraqqa." The album was extremely popular among collectors in the Islamic world, and by the end of the 16th century became the predominant format for miniature painting in the Persian Safavid, Mughal and Ottoman empires. The muraqqa largely replaced the full-scale illustrated manuscript of classics of Persian poetry, which had been the typical vehicle for the finest miniature painters up to that time. Our collection is composed of twenty-one splendid miniatures executed in bright colors (at the exception of 2 in somber colors), highlighted in gold, and within gilt leaves or floral borders. There are five main themes expressed in these images: Picnic scenes (6); couples in love (5); men and (or) women with animals (4); men together (4); and hunting scenes (2). The gold-painted accents, facial features, Chinese-inspired rolling clouds and the use of colored papers are all indications of the Safavid painting tradition. Also, taking into consideration the various garments worn by different people, and the borders of the miniatures, it is reasonable to assume that they were made by the same artist. Each of the 21 Persian miniatures is on paper layed down on cardboard. Size varies from 5 6/8 x 8" to 6 7/8 x 11 1/2". Previous owner's contemporary inscription in Persian at verso of 9 miniatures. Moderate and sporadic rubbing and age-toning along edges (not affecting images). Upper right corner of last miniature chipped (also not affecting the image). Miniatures in overall good to very good condition. g to vg. Item #39310
