Luigi Canina (1795-1856) was pre-eminently and exclusively a classic archaeologist devoted to the architecture and arts of antiquity and the Renaissance. His "Ricerche sul genere di architettura proprio degli antichi giudei ed in particolare sul tempio di Gerusalemme" (Researches upon the Architecture of the Ancient Jews and of the Temple of Jerusalem) showcases the importance of Jewish architecture throughout antiquity. The appearance of Jewish architecture, but also art, and inscriptions increased tremendously in the course of antiquity. Their use and variety were of lesser importance in Israelite-Jewish society of the first millennium BCE and were restricted to a very small number of items and sites for much of the First and Second Temple periods. It was only in late antiquity that Jewish edifices, artifacts, symbols, and inscriptions multiplied geometrically in Jewish communities throughout the world. The striking 14 plates (including 3 folded) contains architectural drawings, details, and floor plans of the following: the tombs of Josaphat, Absalom, and Zechariah; the First Temple (built in 957 BCE by King Solomon); Herod's Temple (a renovation of the Second Temple); and the Royal Palace of Solomon.
