About the author: Raphael De Cordova Lewin (West Indies, 1844 - New York 1886). After studying in London, he came to the United States, and had charge of Hebrew congregations in Shreveport, Louisiana, Savannah, Georgia, and Brooklyn, New York he published a monthly, "The New Era," a weekly, "The Jewish Advocate," and a work entitled "What is Judaism?"
