L'Art Amoureux des Indes [INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR]

Lausanne: La Guilde du Livre, 1957. First edition. Softcover. Quarto. 95, [7]pp. Original glassine over photo-illustrated dust-jacket and stiff wrappers. Front free endpaper inscribed and signed by the author. Photo-illustrated title page. Striking photo-book on the erotic sculpture of India, splendidly illustrated throughout with over 100 velvety heliogravures (many full page). In most cases, carved by hand out of stone, the statues illustrate the degree to which religion and culture was valued. Many human work centuries were spent in the creation of these carvings. They also demonstrate the role that sexual activity and expression had in the religions of India. Unlike the sexually repressive religions of Christianity and Islam, the artwork openly displays the bare human body and humans engaged in all varieties of sexual acts. If you read this book with an eye to appreciating other cultures, then there is no erotic nature to this art, just expressions of life in religions that allowed all aspects of human activity to be displayed. Moderate shelf wear on glassine. Glassine in overall good, dust-jacket, wrappers and interior in very good condition. g+ to vg. Item #38514
