Hawes, in a letter to the publisher: "When you enquired of me, some months since, whether I had any book, of a religious character, which I could recommend for publication, I put into your hand a little volume... that should go before the public in its original form. The author, whoever he may be, was evidently well qualified for his work." Hawes purchased the book in while in England. "I know of no work of the same size which contains a greater amount of matter adapted to be useful to sabbath school teachers and pupils, and indeed to all who wish to understand the meaning of many customs and facts referred to in the Bible" (Hawes). A wonderful companion to indulge in aspects of everyday life, e.g. dressing, food, traveling, music, etc. but also covering subjects like ancient habitation, warfare and military affairs, adopted children and the art of writing among many other topics. Profusely illustrated with 120 in-text and full page engravings throughout. Binding with heavy wear along edges, scuffing on covers with tan cloth glued to spine and covers to stabilize binding with original spine glued to the cloth. Ex-library.
