Hebrew and English title pages. A collection of poems by the 17th century Italian rabbi, Leone Modena. Of particular interest are Modena's poems dedicated to prominent Christians. Includes Modena's translation of Aristo's Ventesim Ottavo along with 4 plates of facsimiles of an early edition of the poem in Italian. This book is useful for understanding early modern Italian Judaism, which was always well integrated within general society. As with the Netherlands, many of the features usaully associated with the Haskalah were present in Italy long before the late 18th century. Text in Hebrew with a long English introduction by Simon Bernstein. Head and tail of spine bumped. Top of backstrip split. Rear binding starting, but still intact. Cover stained and scratched. Book plate on front endpaper with printed inscription from the author. Book plate on rear endpaper from previous owner. Rippling to leaves. Overall in good condition. g. Item #38185
