Anatolian Kilims: The Caroline & H. McCoy Jones Collection [INSCRIBED AND SIGNED]

San Francisco: Sotheby's Publications - The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, 1990. First edition. Hardcover. Folio. 275, [1]pp. Original pictorial dust-jacket over blue cloth, with gold lettering on spine. Color frontispiece. Title page inscribed and signed by Caroline McCoy Jones and Cathryn M. Cootner. This magnificent book is the first significant study of kilims for over ten years, and the only major independent work on Anatolian kilims published. The book centres around the Caroline & H. McCoy Jones Collection (now in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco) which is generally acknowledged as the greatest of its kind anywhere in the world. The 110 kilims in the collection, most of which are datable to before the 18th century, include many of the earliest and finest examples of particular kilim design types, some of which have no comparable published examples. Includes an important essay by Cathryn M. Cootner, Curator-in-Charge of the Textiles Department at the Fine Arts Museums, which introduces the subject of oriental flatweaving to the general reader. In this essay, which is accompanied by numerous line drawings, she explains her hypothesis that the origins of certain kilim designs can be traced back to neolithic basketry. This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with numerous color plates and in-text line drawings and b/w photographic reproductions. Dust-jacket, binding and interior in overall very good condition. vg. Item #37426
