One of 66 Insel-Bücherei books commissioned from artists in Europe, USA and Japan by the collector Julia Vermes to be "worked over" as artist books and exhibited as the "Collection Vermes" on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Insel-Verlag series "Die Insel-Bücherei" in Basel, Leipzig and Offenbach, Germany. The only commonality for all artists was the format of the books of the series. Retaining half-title, title page and some of the poems translated into German John Baker applies oil paint with potent, intense strokes covering the text of four pages.
