Haiku. Artist Book [SIGNED BY AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR]

Frankfurt: Insel-Verlag, 2012. Limited First edition. Hardcover. Signed by Summers and Hatry on verso of imprint at rear. Octavo. Unpaginated, 10 leaves. Original decorative green boards with original art and lettering on labels of cover and spine. Original oil on paper title page. One of a kind artist book created in a collaboration between artist Heide Hatry and Joseph Summer. One of 66 Insel-Bücherei books commissioned from artists in Europe, USA and Japan by the collector Julia Vermes to be "worked over" as artist books and exhibited as the "Collection Vermes" on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Insel-Verlag series Die Insel-Bücherei in Basel, Leipzig and Offenbach, Germany. The only commonality for all artists was the format of the books of the series. Haiku by Summer and Hatry, originally Insel-Bücherei Nr. 604, Aristide Malliol: Hirtenleben. 36 Holzschnitte, is a beautifully delivered work in the tradition of the Japanese poetic form. The text: "How is it possi / to write a coherent po / in only seven" is presented on 12 pages in Harty's vibrant oils on paper pasted over the Malliol woodcuts with Summer's text delivered word by word on each page. The Haiku's text also penciled in the traditional form on the signature page at rear. Binding and interior in overall very good condition. vg. Item #37193

Heide Hatry is a German, New York based neo-conceptual artist, curator and editor. Her work often is body-related or employs animal flesh and organs. It is controversial among critics who either hail Hatry as "ingenious provocateur" or dismiss her as "sensationalist." Hatry ran a rare bookstore in Heidelberg and has created more than 200 artist books, many of them in public and private collections. See Heide Hatry's website.

Joseph Summer is a composer from Massachusetts known for his Shakespearian themes and interpretations with the Shakespeare Concerts in Massachusetts and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Haiku included in this artist book was written by Summer 30 years ago. Asides of this artist book Summer collaborated on Hatry's artist book "Not a Rose."
