Zohar 'al ha-Torah 5 Volumes. (Complete)

Livorno: Yisrael Kushta, 1877 or 1878 - 1887 or 1888. Hardcover. 4to. Contemporary half leather over black pebbled cloth. Speckled edges. Complete edition of the "Zohar." Includes "Sitrei Torah," "Midrash ha-Ne'elam" and "Ra'aya Meheimna." Printed with large easy to read block letters, vowel markings and footnotes and comments from R. Isaac Luria, R. Moses Cordovero and R. Chaim Joseph David Azulai. The fact that vowel markings are used is rare for an Aramaic text. The "Zohar" is the most important work in the Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah. It was attributed to the 2nd century sage R. Simon b. Yohai, though it was likely produced in the circle surrounding R. Moses de Leon in Spain during the late 13th century. It was first printed in Mantua in 1558. There was an earlier printing of the comments of Cordovero and Azulai in Livorno in 1791. Italy served an important role in the spread of Kabbalah in terms of printing and as a key stepping stone from which kabbalistic ideas could spread from the land of Israel to Europe. Text in Aramaic with some Hebrew. Spines badly scratched and chipped. Foxing to leaves. Overall in good- condition. g-. Item #37064
