Octavo. 421pp. Professionally re-cased retaining original three quarter leather spine over brocade black silk paper boards with floral and animal motifs, gilt tooling and lettering on spine. Marbled edges and modern stiff light brown end and free endpapers. Collected verse written by Heine since the publication of his Buch der Lieder in 1827 including Deutschland: Ein Wintermärchen; offering a satirical view of the political climate in Germany based on Heine's observations during a journey to Germany in late 1847, containing passages which had to be omitted or changed in the separate publication at the same time due to censorship. Misprint on page 190, VIII instead of XII (see Houben, Verbotene Literatur). Text in German, Gothic script. Leather lightly scuffed and frayed at head of spine. Light wear along edges. Sabersky Ex Libris on inside front cover. Birthday dedication handwritten on verso of modern front endpaper with original front endpapers retained and glued to modern replacements. Heavy glue residue on original free front endpapers affecting dedication and opposite blank page. Light sporadic foxing of block.
