McCune, on death row for rape, met Lyon in 1968 when the photographer was working on his book about the Texas Department of Corrections, "Conversations with the Dead." Lyon made audio recordings of conversations with McCune, which were aired many years later on NPR. He and McCume corresponded over the years, with McCune sending many letters that included his watercolor paintings. His work was exhibited at Rice University in 1970 alongside Lyon's photography. Lyon wrote an introduction to McCune's autobiography and in 1980 McCune appeared in Lyon's film "Born to Film." McCune was released from prison in 1974.
