Introduction à l'étude comparative des langues indo-européennes [Alabama Linguistic and Philological Series #3]

University, Alabama: University of Alabama Press, 1964. Reprint. Hardcover. Large octavo. XIV, [2], 516pp. Original printed dust-jacket over orange cloth with black lettering on spine. First published in 1903, Antoine Meillet's Introduction a l'Étude comparative des langues Indo-Européennes exemplifies the key methodologies and insights of early twentieth-century comparative linguistics. Its primary aim was to provide a brief but comprehensive overview of the Indo-European languages and their shared linguistic structures. Meillet accomplished this object and more in his Introduction, outlining a theory of language change that would influence a generation of linguists, including his students Émile Benveniste and André Martinet. Meillet's debt to his own mentor, Ferdinand de Saussure, is evident in his conception of language as simultaneously social and structural, a lived reality and a constantly evolving grammatical system. This copy is the reprint of the eighth edition (1937). It remains a valuable introduction to the phonology, morphology, and grammar of the Indo-European language family. Some age wear on dust-jacket with edges rubbed and partly creased. Tail of spine and upper back cover partly chipped. Binding has some minor discoloration on spine. Text in French, Preface in English. Dust-jacket in overall fair, binding in good, interior in very good condition. g+. Item #36059
