Jewish Traditions in Manichaean Cosmogony in Light of the New Evidence from the "Book of Giants" (A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy)

Cincinnati: Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, 1989. Hardcover. Signed. 393pp. Original red cloth with gold lettering on spine. Doctoral dissertation of which a later version was published in 1992 under the title "Jewish Lore in Manichaean Cosmogony: Studies in the 'Book of Giants' Traditions." This dissertation was refereed by Ben Zion Wacholder and Herbert P. Paper. It is a study of the "Book of Giants," a work found among the Dead Sea scrolls of which only Middle Persian fragments had previously been known. This book offers a version of the story hinted at in Genesis and told in greater detail in the "Book of Enoch" of fallen angels fathering giants with human women. The author uses this text to argue that the later Christian Manichaean tradition, despite its hostility to the Old Testament, was deeply indebted to earlier Jewish sources. Author's inscription on front free endpaper. Stamp on the bottom of rear endpaper. In very good condition. vg+. Item #36026
