Octavo. lxxxiv, 160 (2)pp. Rebound in modern black cloth with gilt lettering on cover and spine. Original wrappers bound in. First attempt to present the cuneiform writings of the First Persian Empire, the Achaemenid Empire from 600 - 400 B. C. in one publication, enabling the reader to compare three versions of texts. The name is drawn from king Achaemenes who ruled the empire from 705–675 BC Around 500 BC the empire had expanded to include most of the ancient world, from the Balkans to the Indus Valley and eventually Egypt as well. The Battle of Plataea in 479 BC, a defeat against the Greek, marked the end of the Persian expansion into Europe. Based on the originals, photographs and reproductions on paper, the cuneiform writings are carefully edited and revised. This copy is from the library of the renowned linguist professor Herbert H. Paper and contains various papers with Paper's handwritten and typed notes, a letter (in French from 1952) from the Russian-born French archeologist Roman Ghirshman who was specialized in ancient Iran, an Aerogramme from professor emeritus at the University of Vienna Manfred Mayrhofer (in German from 1959), known for his etymological dictionary of Sanskrit, and an unidentified letter from a professor at the University of Tel-Aviv (in Hebrew from 1969). Extensive pencil notes throughout. Text in German and Persian. Paper's name handwritten by him with handwritten note: "Kindly given to me from the library of Dr. Samuel Feigin, died Jan. 3, 1950." Binding rubbed, more at spine, with original wraps and book block lightly age-toned. Bindings and interior in overall good to very good condition. g to vg. Item #35976
