London: The Studio, 1922. First edition. Hardcover. Large Quarto. ix, 36pp., 96 plates. Original half vellum over gray boards with gilt-stamped ruling and lettering on cover and spine; raised bands. After being educated in the Military Academy at West Point, Whistler got an appointment in the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey at Washington in 1854. Here he received the technical instructions which made it possible for him to become the great etcher we know. Illustrated with 96 of Whistler's superb etchings, 22 of them originals from proofs in the British Museum, with tissue guards. Binding rubbed with some wear along edges. Light staining on front cover and three inch wide and half an inch high stain at bottom of back cover, bleeding through to plate 69 with descending impact (not affecting images). Starting a front endpaper, this foxed as is back endpaper. Binding and interior in overall good condition. g. Item #35944
