Christianity in Talmud and Midrash

London: Williams & Norgate, 1903. First edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xvi, 449pp. Original blue cloth with gold lettering on spine. The major study of references to Jesus and Christianity in rabbinic literature that has never been surpassed. The author was a Christian, though one who showed great respect and sensitivity toward Jews. There is a long history of controversy regarding anti-Jesus statements by the rabbis. Jews have often countered that statements referring to Jesus do not mean the Christian Jesus, but another Jewish sectarian, who lived more than a century beforehand. The author also tackles the issue of the term "min," which has traditionally been assumed to mean Christians. Text in English with appendix (pages 401-36) offering sources in their original Hebrew and Aramaic. Cover sunned and stained with paint on the back fore edge. Head and tail of spine chipped. Corners bumped and rubbed. Stamp from previous owner on front endpaper. Slight foxing to leaves. Overall in good condition. g. Item #35892
