Henry Berkowitz was a member of the first graduating class of Hebrew Union College in 1883. He helped established the Jewish Chautauqua Society and was heavily involved in the Federation of Jewish philanthropies in Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Rabbinical Association and the Central Conference of American Rabbis. During World War I he served as an American army chaplain.
