Benjamin Rush, one of the leaders of the American Enlightenment, signed the Declaration of Independence and served as Surgeon General in the Continental army; later became a professor of chemistry, medical theory and clinical practice at the University of Pennsylvania. An account covering the full range of known mental illnesses of the time in an attempt to place them "... under the direction of new principles, and that new inferences of a particular nature are deduced from them" (Author).
