"These rare papyri of the 5th century B.C., a collection unique in the western world, are published here for the first time. Their existence was unknown until 1947 when they came to the Brooklyn Museum through a bequest, but it has been ascertained that they were acquired in 1895 by Charles Edwin Wilbour, the American Egyptologist, three years before his death. The documents concern the Jewish military colony on the island of Elephantine, at Assuan in Egypt, and have as their central figure a temple servior" (publisher). Illustrated with reproductions of photographs of ancient documents from the Jewish Colony at Elephantine. Edited with a historical introduction by Emil G. Kraeling.
