Jüdisches Leben in Wort und Bild

Mannheim: J. Bensheimer, 1891. First edition. Hardcover. Quarto. XVI, 280pp. Original gilt, red, green, and blue-stamped illustrated cloth with gold and black lettering on spine and front cover. All edges gilt. Decorative endpapers. Engraved frontispiece protected with a tissue guard. Title page in red and black lettering. Vignette on title. Collection of twenty-six stories illustrating various aspects of Jewish life and culture in Europe prior to the twentieth century. Each story takes place in a different country and develops an isolated topic or theme from Jewish life in a sometimes humorous, sometimes dramatic, and often sentimental fashion. While the endings are always happy, the level of historic realism in the stories is high. Jewish Life offers a richly detailed portrait of Jewish customs and culture prior to the deplorably successful attempt to destroy them during the Holocaust. This work is exquisitely illustrated throughout with 27 full-page plates in heliogravure, and numerous in-text illustrations and vignettes. Moderate rubbing along edges. Upper back cover damp-stained, thus slightly affecting upper margin of very last pages (not affecting text or illustrations). Front free endpaper missing. Text in German. Binding in overall fair to good, interior in good+ condition. g. Item #35378
