London: John Camden Hotton, 1860. First English language edition. Hardcover. Octavo. xxxvii, 64pp. Original black cloth-backed red paper-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. Green endpapers. Illustrated headpieces, vignettes, and decorative initials. Frontispiece woodcut preceding Luther's preface. First translation into English, with introduction and notes by John Camden Hotten. Introduction outlines the history of vagabonds and beggars dating back to records of the Middle Ages. Luther, in his preface to the Liber Vagatorum, attributes the first printing of the book to "Expertus in Truffis" proclaiming the need to make this book known everywhere so "that men may see and understand how mightily the devil rules in this world." Luther maintains the origins of the Liber Vagatorum to be in the Jewish culture since many of the words in the vocabulary have Hebrew roots. He cautions to be prudent with beggars distinguishing between local paupers and "outlandish and strange beggars" and point out the latter as the perpetrators of roguery whereas the local ones, properly supervised, ought to be helped in all Christian charity. The book concludes with the extensive vocabulary. Binding rubbed with moderate wear along edges. Small chip at head and some scuffing at joints of spine. Ex Libris on inside cover. Table of content page loosening. Light, sporadic foxing throughout. Cover in overall good-, interior in good+ condition. g. Item #35372
