Stunning collection of 40 illustrations from the Gospels, after original drawings by Frédéric Overbeck composed between 1843 and 1851, and engraved by the best artists of the period such as Friedrich Ludy, Franz Keller, Friedrich August Pflugfelder, Heinrich Nüsser, X. Steifensand, Franz Massau, Filippo Severati, Bartolomeo Bartoccini, Rudolph Stang, Heinrich Kipp, and A. Rordorf. Born in Lübeck in 1789, Overbeck was a renowned German painter and member of the Nazarene movement, a group of early 19th century German Romantic painters who aimed to revive honesty and spirituality in Christian art. Each engraved plate is protected with a tissue guard. Lower margin of front cover sunned. Minor rubbing along edges of binding. Moderate and sporadic foxing throughout.
