Essays in Jewish Numismatics [Numismatic Studies and Researches, Vol VI]

Jerusalem: The Israel Numismatic Society, 1968. First edition. Hardcover. Quarto. 165, [1]pp (Text), VI plates. Original photographic dust-jacket over tan cloth. Remarkable collection of numismatic essays representing 25 years of devoted efforts to further the knowledge of Jewish numismatics, especially that of the period of the Second Temple. The essays contain general surveys of the numismatic history of Israel or of the Israel Numismatic Society, of which the author is one of the leading members. Such studies as that of the periods of Jerusalem coinage, of the influence of Greco-Roman numismatics on the coins of the Jews cover the field in general. Other essays deal with specific coins, the elusive Perutah, which the author has been able to define with such exactitude on the basis of Talmudic and Evangelic sources, trial shekels, a silver Perutah of the procurators which is unique, an unknown variant of the Judaea capta coin, the story of the wanderings of a coin of Bar-Kochba found in Hungary, etc... Moderate and sporadic chipping along edges of dust-jacket. Dust-jacket in overall fair, binding and interior in very good condition. g. Item #34060
