Haarlem: H. D. Tjeenk Willink & Zoon N.V., 1939. First edition. Softcover. Quarto. [8], 110pp. Uncut and unopened copy. Original printed wrappers with red and black lettering on front cover and spine. First edition of this brief monograph by Willem Adriaan Bonger, a distinguished Dutch sociologist and criminologist whose pioneering research transcended the landscape of criminological thought at a historical juncture when biologically based explanations of crime predominated. This work contains: (1) a summary and evaluation of contributions to the theory of race and crime derived from anthropology, biology, psychology, and sociology in Europe and America; (2) a summary of statistical data available in Europe and in the United States on the subject of race and crime from the 1880s to 1933; (3) a critical evaluation of both the theoretical and quantitative data; and (4) an extensive bibliography. Includes data on criminality of African-Americans, Jews, Mediterraneans, Alpines and Nordics, Ugro-Finns and East Baltics. Willem Bonger committed suicide together with his wife on May 15, 1940 after the capitulation of the Dutch army to Germany. Text in Dutch. Wrappers and interior in very good condition. vg.
