According to legend this translation was sponsored by King Ptolemy II Philadelphus of Egypt in the 2nd century B.C.E. who hired seventy Jewish scholars to translate the Hebrew Bible into Greek. Whatever the truth of this story, the Septuagint was certainly the first translation of the Bible and played a critical role in the spread of Judaism in the Hellenistic world, paving the way for Christianity. Includes the books of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha. This scholarly edition, which includes an introduction and footnotes, was first published in 1935. Text in Greek with a German introduction.
