Aristarch von Samos [Serta Graeca: Beiträge zur Erforschung griechischer Texte, Band 1]

Wiesbaden: Dr. Ludwig Reichert, 1992. First edition. Hardcover. Quarto. VI, [2], 408pp (Texte), [52]pp (Plates), [4]pp. Original blue cloth with gold lettering on spine and front cover. Remarkable work on Aristarchus (310 BC – ca. 230 BC), the ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician who presented the first known model that placed the Sun at the center of the known universe with the Earth revolving around it. He was influenced by Philolaus of Croton, but he identified the "central fire" with the Sun, and put the other planets in their correct order of distance around the Sun. His astronomical ideas were often rejected in favor of the geocentric theories of Aristotle and Ptolemy. Text in German. Binding and interior in overall very good condition. vg. Item #32931
