The German Attack on the Hebrew Schools in Palestine

London: Offices of "The Jewish Chronicle" and "The Jewish World" 1918. First edition. Softcover. Octavo. 19, [1]pp. Original printed wrappers. In pre-WWI Palestine, the powerful Hilfsverein, the German Jewish philanthropic organization, acting at the instance, direct or indirect, of the Imperial German Government, was in charge of instructing almost half the students studying in modern schools. When it began to suppress the use of Hebrew in its institutions in favor of German, it aroused at once a bitter opposition, both among the schools and the population, and the struggle that ensued formed one of the most striking and significant episodes in the modern history of Palestinian Jewry. This remarkable booklet tells the story of this epic struggle. Ex library copy (Temple B'nai B'rith Library) with stickers on front wrap, library pocket on inside of front cover, and stamp on title page. Upper corner partly creased, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Wrappers and interior in overall good+ condition. g. Item #32398
