Rise and Fall of the Anabaptists [The Social Side of the Reformation in Germany, Volume III]

London: Swan Sonnenschein & Co., 1903. First edition. Hardcover. Octavo. VI, [2], 407, [1]pp. Original blue cloth with gold lettering on spine. Publisher's logo on title page. Remarkable work on Protestant Christians of the Radical Reformation of 16th-century Europe. The name Anabaptist is derived from the Latin term anabaptista, or "one who baptizes over again." This name was given them in reference to the practice of re-baptizing converts who already had been baptized as infants. Anabaptists required that baptismal candidates be able to make their own confessions of faith and so rejected baptism to infants. As a result of re-baptism, Anabaptists were heavily persecuted during the 16th century and into the 17th by both Protestants and Roman Catholics. Rubbing on spine and covers. Very minor age toning along paper margin. Binding in overall fair to good-, interior in good+ to very good condition. g. Item #31947
