Large Octavo. 144 fine steel engravings on vellum in 18 booklets with 8 plates each; loose leaves with tissue guards; format "klein Regal." Later red pebbled board portfolio with string ties housing 18 booklets in yellow textured cotton rag wrappers with decorative ruling and black lettering on covers. Plates only, issued in advance of the text by Dr. L. Ewald. Booklets one through eleven correspond to the Old Testament and booklets one through seven to the New Testament. Compositions after famous artists by the Strasbourg engraver and artist Carl (Charles-Louis) Schuler (1785-1852). The English copper plate Bible of Macklin served as one of the sources of inspiration. Each engraving with title and artist name printed on plate. Missing 11 prints of Old Testament, plates LXXXIX-LXXXXIX, with images from the books of Daniel, Jonah and Maccabees, and 43 prints of New Testament, plates LVII-LXXXXIX, following plate LVI from the book of Luke. This work was issued as a monthly subscription in 12 booklets each for the Old and the New Testament. Printed text on inside back cover announces forthcoming descriptive text written by Dr. L. Ewald to accompany images. Text in German. Portfolio rubbed. Wraps with wear along uncut edges, some light staining and rubbed, some spines with closed tears. Prints moderately foxed in margins not affecting images. Portfolio and booklets in overall g+ to very good condition. g+ to vg. Item #31793
