The author, Mayer Sulzberger a 19th century German-American Jew. He served as a judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Throughout his career he showed great interest in Jewish affairs. He was secretary of the board at the Maimonides College. He was also one of the founders of the Young Men's Hebrew Association (YMHA) and a chairman of the Jewish Publication Society of America (JPS).
