Studies in Ancient Greek Society: The Prehistoric Aegean
London: Lawrence & Wishart, 1961. Reprint. Softcover. Octavo. 626pp. Original photographic wrappers over cloth with gold lettering on spine. This volume is planned as the first of several with the aim of consolidating the ground covered in "Aeschylus & Athens." It is in effect an expansion of the first five chapters of that work, reinforcing the argument and treating at length some fundamental problems that were only touched on there, especially matriarchy, land-tenure, Aegean prehistory, and epic. Its range coincides approximately with the Bronze Age, except that the evolution of epic is followed down to its culmination in the 6th century B.C. This work is profusely illustrated with 85 in-text figs, 18 tables, and 11 full-page and in-text maps. Very minor age toning on spine and along edges of wrappers. Price clipped on front flap. Wraps in overall good+, binding and interior in very good condition. vg. Item #31078
